Rural Physicians Group
“In our early years, we did a great job of growing our hospital customer base in multiple states,” said Dr. Sukhbir Pannu, CEO and Founder, Rural Physicians Group, “However, I quickly realized the company was reaching a whole new level in terms of scale and complexity. Since I am a physician who is not trained to execute advanced operational practices, I knew I needed help to continue to grow the business.”
Rural Physicians Group provides a physician network of full-time, on-site hospitalists and surgicalists to help rural hospitals meet the needs of the communities they serve. By working with Rural Physicians Group, rural hospitals are able to deliver better outcomes and expanded inpatient, community-based services. This means that rural communities, which represent 20% of the US population, have better access to local, high-quality hospital care.
“I became convinced that our vision and values were closely aligned, and Sorenson would be the right partner. I couldn’t be happier with the relationship and results.”
“We not only liked RPG’s business and the way their team had successfully grown to nearly two dozen rural hospital customers in ten states,” said Mark Ludwig, Managing Partner, Sorenson Capital, “We believed in their mission. Rural Physicians Group solves a hard problem for rural, critical access hospitals that are struggling to keep specialists on staff and provide high-quality, community-based care. That was very important to us.”
After investing, Sorenson worked directly with Rural Physicians Group’s team to analyze the company’s operations and identify the best ways to grow the business in terms of target customers, geographies, and service offerings. Operationally, Sorenson helped create infrastructure to support a growing network of physicians, hospitals, and patients. For example, Sorenson worked with RPG’s operations team to develop a system to optimize physician scheduling and its sales and marketing team to build sophisticated go-to-market motions that replaced the company’s traditional word-of-mouth sales process.
“We had a half dozen other investors interested in our business. Sorenson was the one firm that provided me with an unbiased analysis of how working together could make sense,“ continued Dr. Pannu. “Over 18 months, we met with Sorenson 10-15 times. They were very patient. I became convinced that our vision and values were closely aligned, and Sorenson would be the right partner. I couldn’t be happier with the relationship and results.”
Since Sorenson’s investment, Rural Physicians Group has doubled the number of hospital customers, expanded its services offering, and grown its presence to twenty states across the U.S. Most importantly, Rural Physicians Group has stayed true to its mission of providing permanent, high-quality healthcare solutions to rural communities and the hospitals that serve them all across the country.
